A Middle School Student’s Dress Code Controversy: Not About Patriotism
A recent incident at a middle school in Oregon has garnered attention, and surprisingly, it’s not focused on a girl’s outfit. A student named Jake Thompson wore a shirt featuring a “Battlefield Cross,” which includes symbols like a rifle, boots, and a helmet, to express his support for the military. When asked to change, Jake stood his ground and ended up receiving an in-school suspension. His older brother had served in Iraq, and wearing such shirts is Jake’s way of honoring those who serve.
The school’s dress code prohibits clothing that promotes violence, alcohol, or drugs, and unfortunately, the image of a gun falls under the category of prohibited items—regardless of the intended patriotic message. Dress codes can often feel arbitrary, leading to debates about how they disproportionately affect students, particularly girls. However, the strict “no violence” policy is clearly defined, making it hard for schools to selectively enforce what’s deemed appropriate.
Jake expressed his feelings, saying, “I was just upset and heartbroken. My brother means everything to me. Helping and giving back to those who fought for us makes me feel good.” While his emotions are completely valid, it’s crucial to recognize that schools must adhere to their guidelines. There are many ways for Jake to display his support for his brother without violating dress code policies.
In light of recent tragic events, administrators may also be understandably cautious about any imagery that includes firearms. There are plenty of other ways to showcase support for the military without using such symbols. Next time, Jake might want to consider a different shirt or be ready for another suspension.
