As we enter October, we recognize it as LGBTQ+ History Month—a time dedicated to honoring the rich and diverse history of the LGBTQ+ community. This year’s observance feels particularly significant amid ongoing efforts by some politicians and school boards to erase our history through curriculum restrictions, book bans, and cuts to diversity programs. Such actions are part of a broader agenda to undermine our community. Yet, we collectively know that embracing our history fosters connection, resilience, and empowerment.
LGBTQ+ families have always existed, and we are here to stay. By acknowledging the legacy of those who bravely fought for our rights—both in the public eye and in private—we draw strength from that shared history. Recognizing our past not only gives us a sense of belonging but also fuels our determination to create a brighter future for our children, much like those who came before us.
This LGBTQ+ History Month, we proudly celebrate our 45th anniversary by reaffirming our commitment to safeguarding and sharing the history of LGBTQ+ family equality. We are excited to announce the appointment of our first Associate Director of Archives, Storytelling, and Brand.
Forty-Five Years of Change
As someone who has been involved with this organization for many years, I can attest to the importance of connecting with our past. The power of our history lies not just in the celebrated LGBTQ+ icons we honor, but also in the everyday actions of individuals whose contributions often go unnoticed. These small yet significant moments collectively shape our movement.
For instance, consider the group of gay dads who united at the first National March on Washington for Gay and Lesbian Rights 45 years ago. Their desire for connection led to the creation of the Gay Fathers Coalition, which has since evolved into the leading national organization for LGBTQ+ families.
Or think about the inspiring story of Lucas and Mia, who opened their home to other LGBTQ+ families in 1994, paving the way for what would become the largest annual gathering of LGBTQ+ families worldwide. This year, as we celebrated the 30th anniversary of Family Week, we welcomed over 1,500 individuals to share in a week of connection and joy.
We must also remember the brave children of LGBTQ+ parents, like Jamie and Alex, who shared their stories during pivotal moments in the fight for marriage equality. Their courage drew attention from influential figures, helping to shape landmark legal decisions that established marriage equality in the United States.
In addition to these historical moments, countless community builders have taken it upon themselves to create safe spaces and support networks for LGBTQ+ families, even adapting during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic. Their efforts reflect the ongoing commitment to fostering acceptance and love within our communities.
Your Story Matters
As we reflect on our shared history, we invite you to contribute your own experiences. Every LGBTQ+ family has a unique story that adds to the rich tapestry of our community. Whether it’s a cherished memory of a loved one, the joy of welcoming a child, or finding family in unexpected places, we want to hear from you.
You can share your story by reaching out to us or by submitting your memories through our online form. Together, we can create a narrative that showcases the strength, love, and hope that have characterized LGBTQ+ family life over the past 45 years.

As we commemorate 45 years of advocacy and progress, we celebrate the contributions of countless individuals, from families creating connections to children sharing their powerful stories. We encourage everyone to share their experiences, enriching our collective history and inspiring future generations.
