Let’s Embrace Courage When Confronting Bullying

Kids face bullying on the school bus.

When I first shared my experience of being bullied on my blog, I was shocked by the overwhelming response. I opened up about my emotions and the impact it had on my life. I felt violated, hated, and worthless. But even more devastating was the sense of helplessness that enveloped me. It was that feeling of powerlessness that nearly drove me to take my own life. People were aware of my suffering; I could see it in their eyes. I knew they laughed and looked the other way. It felt like I was wearing a neon target, while my inner pain remained unseen.

I sought help from teachers and school staff, but my cries for assistance fell on deaf ears. I was told that unless they witnessed the bullying, there was little they could do. I was screaming for help, but it felt like my voice was drowned out. If only I had known then what I know now—I should have been brave.

I should have confronted those who harassed me. I should have yelled at those who spat at me, ensuring everyone around heard my voice. I should have demanded accountability from those who stood by, asking them why they chose silence. I should have rejected the school’s notion that they could only act if they saw the bullying. Instead, I accepted their inaction, believing it was all I could do.

Now, I recognize the importance of addressing threats head-on. It doesn’t always require a loud confrontation; sometimes, a calm and collected response is enough to let others know I won’t be a victim any longer. I can choose to walk away, unfriend toxic individuals, and block negative content. While I will raise my voice when necessary, I refuse to allow myself to be victimized again.

I also won’t let a school tell me they can’t help. My old high school tries to take bullying seriously, but not all schools do. There needs to be a universal understanding that bullying is a serious issue that requires proactive intervention. Schools must take responsibility for their actions—or lack thereof. When they become aware of bullying situations, they should be accountable for the outcomes of their inaction. No more hiding problems under the rug.

I made a promise to myself: I will never again be a victim. From now on, I’ll be courageous for myself and others. I will stand up to bullies and make it clear that their behavior is unacceptable. Imagine the impact if we all stood together against bullying and showed support for those who are being targeted. It really can be that simple. Just remember to #BeBrave.
