There I was, belting out “Venus” by Bananarama in the car (don’t act like you haven’t done it), when my daughter piped up from the backseat.
“Mommy, why are you singing about…uh, you know?”
I paused mid-chorus.
“Is it saying, ‘I’m your…’ something inappropriate? That doesn’t sound right!”
Kids really have a knack for turning our lives upside down, don’t they? With their tiny, sticky hands, they manage to turn normalcy into chaos. One moment, they seem determined to drive us to the edge, and the next, they surprise us with an unexpected gem of a comment.
Motherhood is one big surprise party. I often tell my friends who just became moms to toss out all those baby books they collected during pregnancy. Seriously, burn them! You can’t possibly prepare for the wild ride that is parenting because kids—and people in general—are full of surprises.
When I first held my baby, it took a moment for the reality to sink in. I was staring at this tiny human who was both a mini-me and a complete stranger. All the knowledge I had gained during pregnancy? It disappeared in an instant, especially since I was too exhausted to remember anything anyway. I wiped the slate clean and started fresh.
That’s parenthood for you! It’s so complex that experts have been trying to guide us through it for ages, yet none of us have it all figured out—not even the so-called experts. They keep contradicting themselves on co-sleeping, breastfeeding, and what’s safe to eat during pregnancy. If you can think of it, there’s probably an “expert” study on it. But really? Just toss that info aside!
At the end of the day, we’re meant to love our kids, meet their needs, and trust our instincts. What works for one family may not work for another. Trying to fit your experience into a box labeled by someone else can lead to disappointment and guilt. It takes courage to let go of expectations and be adaptable enough to see your child for who they truly are. Motherhood is just as much about personal growth as it is about nurturing your kids.
After clearing up my daughter’s misunderstanding about the song, I felt grateful for her quirky perspective. “I don’t want my… to catch fire!” she exclaimed.
“That would be awful!” I replied, laughing. Moments like these are priceless, and there’s no manual for them. And honestly, that’s what makes parenting so much fun—never knowing what’s coming next.
