Test Asks Kid to Explain How He Solved a Math Problem, and It’s Hilarious!
Lately, there’s been a lot of chatter about Common Core standards, especially the part where kids have to justify their answers. Many parents are left scratching their heads, wondering why getting the right answer isn’t enough.
Take this simple math problem, for example:
Max has four quarters. Sarah has 30 nickels. Who has more money?
Max confidently answers, “Max.” But when the teacher presses him, “How do you know? Show your thinking,” he delivers a response that’s as creative as it is amusing.
Let’s all take a moment to appreciate this kid’s unique take on the “show your thinking” request. It’s refreshing and definitely outside the box! Any parent would be proud, especially since he even drew himself looking like a little alien, looking rather forlorn.
A Reddit user named Laura shared this gem of an assignment with the caption, “This is why my son is destined for greatness.” I can’t help but love both her and her child. Laura later shared with a parenting site, “He really took the prompt literally! We had a good laugh and now he totally understands!”
Here’s the icing on the cake: his teacher awarded him full credit for his imaginative answer, giving him an enthusiastic “100%!” Complete with the word “wow!” written in the margins. Laura praised his teacher for encouraging creativity at every turn. Kudos to her!
And speaking of math confusion, just last week there was a buzz around another worksheet that left many kids scratching their heads. It asked, “Does 5+5+5 equal 15, or does 3+3+3+3+3 equal 15? Explain your reasoning.” Poor little Jenny must have been banging her head against the wall trying to figure that one out!
