Dad Steps Up to Support His Disabled Daughter’s Passion
There’s nothing quite like the excitement of a high school football game, especially when you witness a heartwarming act of love from a devoted parent.
Meet Mark Thompson, a dad from Omaha whose daughter, Lily, has a deep passion for playing the trumpet. This fall, she joined Westside High School’s band program as a freshman, eager to participate in the marching band. However, due to her cerebral palsy and reliance on a wheelchair, marching in formation while playing was a challenge. That’s where Mark stepped in.
He reached out to the band director to explore ways for Lily to join in the fun. The solution? All she needed was a partner to learn the formations and push her wheelchair. So, Mark made it a priority to leave his IT job four days a week to accompany Lily to band practice, where he quickly picked up all the choreography for their upcoming performances. Every Friday night, he proudly stands behind her as she plays during halftime.
Mark shared with Today that what began as a simple way to help his daughter has blossomed into a passion of his own. Having played in a band throughout high school and college, he cherishes the joy marching brings to Lily, and he loves being more involved in her life, something many parents miss out on. “You drop your kids off at school, and you don’t get to experience their day with them,” he notes. “So, I’m very grateful.”
