We recently celebrated my daughter’s 5th birthday, and I made the ambitious decision to invite her entire class (I was thrilled she wanted to include everyone!) along with a few extra friends. Here are the five kids who truly stood out:
-
The Cake Face-Plant Kid
This little legend was a sight to see! He’s not mine, which makes it even better. With his dad just a few feet away, he boldly dove face-first into his slice of cake, decked out in vibrant red and blue frosting. Not a trace of fear on his face—only pure joy as the room erupted in laughter. I couldn’t resist grabbing my camera for this classic “show Mommy how the piggy eats” moment. -
The Gift-Grabber
With her cute pale blond braids, adorable dress, and trendy cowgirl boots, this girl looked like she stepped out of a fashion magazine. While I was trying to enjoy the moment of my daughter opening her gifts, this little angel turned into a mischievous whirlwind, tearing through tissue paper like it was confetti. I couldn’t intervene fast enough on the first gift, but I managed to rein her in a bit so my daughter could actually enjoy her own presents. -
The Little Star
This girl was so poised and charming, she could easily be auditioning for a role in Hollywood (seriously, she’s in talks with agents!). She greeted me with a warm hug and sat quietly while munching on her pizza and cake. She effortlessly said “please” and “thank you” without any reminders, lighting up the party with her radiant smile—definitely not my child! -
The Runaway Redhead
One dad dropped off his daughter at the party, making her my responsibility for the next two hours. She was calm and sweet during the magic show and even cuddled up on my lap for a while. But as the party wound down, I noticed her dad looking frantically around the room. I thought she must just be out of sight until I realized I couldn’t see her either! My heart raced as I feigned calmness while giving him a look that said, “No worries, I totally know where she is.” A quick check of the bathroom revealed she was safe and sound just outside with another girl and mom. Phew! -
The Birthday Girl Herself
My freshly minted 5-year-old started the party sitting quietly, but her eyes lit up with wonder during the magician’s tricks. She was not happy when her sister tried to open her new Elsa doll without permission, but she floated home on a sugar high from her cake. Now we have a whole year to recover before we do it all again!
Honorable mentions go to the “Ask-Too-Many-Questions Kid” and the “Birthday Cake Stalker.” Congrats to all the partygoers—let’s be honest, I’m never going to get around to sending thank-you cards!
