Frustrated Mom Pens Open Letter to NFL Star
Public figures, especially athletes, have a massive platform, yet they don’t always embody the role models we hope they’ll be for our kids. The mom, who was looking forward to a fun day out, felt let down by Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Thompson’s over-the-top touchdown celebration.
In a heartfelt open letter published in a local newspaper, she expressed her disappointment. Sitting close to the end zone, she and her nine-year-old were excited to witness the game up close. However, when Thompson scored in the fourth quarter and started dancing, they had to turn away in shock. “From our seats, we caught a front-row view of your antics during the fourth quarter. The chest puffing, the pelvic thrusts, the cocky strutting, and the taunting of both the opposing team and fans—it was all too much.”
His celebration drew mixed reactions from the crowd, leading to a wave of boos and the beginning of some playful banter between rival fans. For the mom, Thompson’s actions exemplified “arrogance and poor sportsmanship,” and she argued that, as a public figure, he has a responsibility to set a better example. “I refuse to believe you don’t understand your influence. You earn millions for your performance and are expected to inspire young fans and support charitable causes. Given the NFL’s recent controversies, I’m sure you’ve been advised that your position makes you a role model.”
