5 Insights I Wish I Had in High School

Reflecting on my high school graduation two decades ago, I can’t help but reminisce about standing on that football field with my classmates, all of us filled with hope and dreams. We celebrated our accomplishments and acknowledged the challenges we faced, wearing our oversized caps and hairstyles that defied gravity. Looking back, I wish I could share some wisdom with my younger self—let’s call her “Teen Me.” Here are five things I would tell her:

1. Travel While You Can

One of my biggest regrets is not exploring the world more after high school. Instead, I spent my summers working in an office when I could have been backpacking across Europe. Youth hostels may not be luxurious, but that’s part of the adventure! Traveling while you can embrace the simpler things in life is invaluable. Take that beat-up car and hit the road—experience it all while your standards are still flexible!

2. You’ll Connect with Everyone on Social Media

High school can be an awkward social landscape. I had my close-knit group of friends and often felt out of place alongside the so-called popular crowd. But here’s the kicker: about ten years after graduation, the social hierarchy fades away. You’ll find yourself reconnecting with everyone on Facebook, celebrating their milestones, and feeling genuinely happy for them. It’s a liberating realization that those old cliques don’t matter anymore.

3. Your First Love Is a Learning Experience

Everyone remembers their first love—the one who made your heart race and filled your weekends with joy. For me, that relationship taught me more than just romance; it showed me what I truly wanted in a partner. While it was heart-wrenching when we parted ways, it led me to my true love, someone who understands me on a deeper level. First loves are important, but they often serve as stepping stones to finding lasting happiness.

4. Fashion Will Evolve

As a proud graduate of the ’90s, I was part of some questionable fashion trends. From oversized sweaters to stirrup pants, we all had our fair share of style faux pas. If only I could tell Teen Me that someday, I’d look back and laugh at those choices. The good news? Fashion continues to evolve, and I’ve learned to embrace styles that feel more authentic to me. Trust me, those neon colors won’t be missed!

5. High School Isn’t the Peak of Life

Contrary to what TV shows like “Dawson’s Creek” suggest, high school isn’t the pinnacle of your life. College brings new adventures, and adulthood opens doors to experiences you can’t even imagine yet. Life becomes richer as you chase your dreams, build relationships, and create a family. High school is just the beginning—there’s so much more waiting for you!

As I reflect on the past, I realize that each memory, from school dances to late-night study sessions, has shaped who I am today. While I opted out of the reunion to avoid the nostalgia, I cherish those moments and look forward to the next chapter.
