Teaching Your Toddler Good Manners: Week 42
Ah, manners! We all dream of our kids being polite little angels who sit quietly and don’t cause a scene. But then reality hits, and we realize that teaching toddlers manners isn’t as easy as we thought. It can be downright challenging (to say the least!).
The good news is that it’s never too early to start instilling good manners in your little one. It’s far simpler to teach them the ropes from the beginning than to try to correct poor behavior later. Since toddlers are excellent mimickers, the best way to teach them is by modeling polite behavior yourself. Make saying “please” and “thank you” a regular part of your conversations, even in everyday situations. For example, say things like, “Can I have this toy, please? Thank you!” during playtime. At mealtime, remember to place your napkin on your lap and ask for items to be passed nicely (without a mouthful of food, of course!). You might feel like you’re channeling the spirit of etiquette experts, but trust me, your toddler is soaking it up and will thank you with their manners one day.
You can also take these lessons beyond your home. Head to the park, where your toddler can practice social skills as they wait their turn on the swings or slides. Discuss how behaviors like pushing or cutting in line aren’t kind, and how they might feel if someone did that to them (you’ll find plenty of rude kiddos around to use as examples!).
A friendly tip: Even the littlest ones can start to understand basic kindness and etiquette, but keep your expectations in check — they won’t be model citizens all the time. Just remember that they’re still toddlers; keep things simple and celebrate their successes, even if it’s just for a short while.

In summary, teaching your toddler manners takes patience and practice, but modeling good behavior and using real-life examples will help them learn the importance of kindness and politeness.
