A Burn Survivor’s Christmas Card Dream Came True—and So Much More!
Last week, little Lily Thompson’s heartfelt wish for Christmas cards turned into a holiday miracle. After her story caught the attention of the internet, support poured in from all corners of the globe. A Facebook group created by her aunt, Sarah Miller, has been buzzing with updates as Lily poses next to mountains of cards. The card tree she dreamed of filling has not only met her expectations but has surpassed them, overflowing with love and encouragement.
Two years ago, Lily experienced an unimaginable tragedy when a fire claimed the lives of her father, younger sister, and two baby brothers. Found in her father’s embrace, he had given his life to protect her from the flames. Since that day, Lily has bravely undergone more than 50 surgeries to treat the severe burns that cover 75 percent of her body. After the devastating loss, her mother entrusted her care to Sarah, Lily’s aunt.
“Lily lost everything—her family, her home, her beloved toys—every single thing that was once familiar,” Sarah shared with TODAY Parents. “She even lost her reflection, which is something we all take for granted. But despite it all, she wakes up every day with a smile. She embodies hope, faith, and love.”
Her inspiring spirit has touched hearts worldwide. Not only has she received countless cards, but she’s also been unwrapping gifts from supporters around the world. The YouCaring page set up by her aunt has raised nearly $350,000—far exceeding the initial goal of $15,000. And the surprises didn’t stop there!
Recently, Lily was greeted at home by a crowd of well-wishers and news crews as they announced a magical trip to Disney World! Thanks to the efforts of Baking Memories 4 Kids and Give Kids the World, an Orlando resort designed for families like hers, Lily and her family will enjoy a week of fun in February 2016.
Every single card, toy, and dollar symbolizes the incredible power of kindness and community support. It’s heartwarming to see how people can come together for a beautiful cause. Let’s hope Lily receives even more card trees to fill; she deserves all the love the world has to offer!
