About Us
Our Mission
At Family Equity Justice, we are deeply committed to understanding and supporting LGBTQ+ families. With over 11.3 million LGBTQ+ adults in the U.S. and around 3.7 million children with LGBTQ+ parents, we recognize the importance of gathering comprehensive data on diverse family structures. This includes families with a single parent, LGBTQ+ BIPOC families, and those living in rural areas.
The key to effectively serving these families lies in understanding their unique needs. That’s why we launched the Family Equity Justice Project.
The Family Equity Justice Project
The Family Equity Justice Project is an initiative focused on capturing and documenting the experiences of LGBTQ+ families across the nation. Our goal is to connect with as many families as possible to hear their stories, understand their challenges, and celebrate their joys. By collecting robust data, we aim to showcase a true representation of family life, especially for BIPOC, economically disadvantaged, and geographically isolated families outside major urban centers.
As a national nonprofit, we believe that every individual deserves to experience the joy and sense of belonging that family brings. Understanding the full spectrum of experiences among our families is crucial for enhancing our support and advocacy efforts.
Our Goals Include:
- Challenging Misconceptions: We strive to confront existing biases in the data related to LGBTQ+ families, particularly regarding race, socioeconomic status, and family structures.
- Empowerment: We aim to empower our organization to better include BIPOC families and their unique experiences.
- Diverse Community Expansion: Our mission includes broadening the Family Equity community to encompass a wider range of individuals and families from various geographic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Strengthening Capacity: Enhancing our ability to respond to local, state, and national challenges is vital to our mission.
- Concrete Recommendations: We seek to provide actionable insights and ethical research to advance our organization and our movement partners.
The heart of this project is to actively engage with non-urban, BIPOC, and under-resourced LGBTQ+ families. We want to ensure that their perspectives, concerns, and needs are recognized as valuable contributions to the LGBTQ+ family narrative.
The Path Forward
