The New Year’s Goals Every Parent Hopes Their Child Will Embrace

We’re already a few weeks into the new year, and if you’re anything like me, you’ve probably tossed your resolutions aside—or maybe you never even made any! Personally, I’ve found them to be more of a hassle than a help. However, I do wish my little one would set a few of his own goals. No matter how hard I try to guide him, there are definitely some areas where I’d love to see him commit.

So, I’ve come up with a whimsical list of aspirations I’d love my 5-year-old to tackle this year. Of course, I know good and well that resolutions can be tricky, especially for a child! This list is a playful daydream from a parent who’s just trying to navigate the chaos of everyday life.

Goals for the Year

  • Eat dinner.
  • Try to eat healthy.
  • Enjoy what your mom worked hard to prepare.
  • Consume what I heated up for you.
  • Savor these two sugar packets.
  • Just eat something!
  • Finish your meal faster, please.
  • Pick up your clothes.
  • Tidy up your room.
  • Clean yourself!
  • Go to bed on time.
  • Actually sleep.
  • Get some more sleep.
  • Stay in bed until the sun rises.
  • Pretend to sleep, at least.
  • Just lie quietly for a few hours?
  • Practice kindness.
  • Stand up for yourself.
  • Avoid hitting.
  • Use your words.
  • Skip the bad language.
  • Talk to us!
  • Share about your day.
  • Not so loud, please.
  • Maybe a little less chatter?
  • Don’t talk back.
  • Can we get a moment of silence?
  • Share your toys.
  • Give that back to me.
  • Show some respect.
  • Use your manners.
  • Say “please.”
  • Remember to say “thank you.”
  • And again, “thank you!”
  • Just a bit of gratitude, please!
  • Don’t forget to say “you’re welcome.”
  • Limit your screen time.

Oh boy, life sure is busy. Just go watch a little TV for now!
