18 Non-Negotiable Rules I Stand Firm On for My Kids – Seriously!

As a mom of three, I’ve established a few hard-and-fast rules that I refuse to bend. These guidelines have helped maintain some sanity in our household, and I hope they might inspire your parenting journey too!

  1. The kids are not allowed in our bedroom.
  2. Alright, they can come in, but they absolutely cannot sleep in our bed.
  3. They can sleep in our bed only if they’re really sick, terrified, or if there’s been an unfortunate bedwetting incident and we’re just too exhausted to change sheets at 2 AM.
  4. No pillow stealing allowed!
  5. If a child wants a corner of a pillow, they must kindly ask for permission first.
  6. Candy is off-limits.
  7. No candy during the weekdays.
  8. Except when we’re at Target, and I desperately need them to be quiet, so I hand them a few lollipops to keep them calm while I focus on our shopping list.
  9. They can have candy only under specific circumstances: in Target, at birthday parties, or if I find a hidden stash of Starburst in my purse during a meltdown. Oh, and if we’re at the bank or dry cleaner and there’s a bowl of candy just sitting there!
  10. Each child can only have 5 to 10 pieces of candy a day.
  11. Video games? Not happening.
  12. No video games during the weekdays.
  13. They can’t even play video games before school on weekdays.
  14. Unless, of course, they’ve brushed their teeth first.
  15. If they’ve taken care of their dental hygiene, they can let me know when they think it’s a good time to play video games on any given day.
  16. So basically, the kids can’t come into our room, eat candy, or play video games — ever. Well, maybe not ever, but only in those rare instances when their whining drives us to make exceptions.
  17. And one last thing: we will NEVER go to McDonald’s.
  18. Okay, okay! Just this once, we can go to McDonald’s, but that’s it!

And trust me, I really mean it!
