Can We Please Stop Calling Ryan Reynolds A Super-Dad?
As a dad who writes about parenting, I often feel like I’m on my own little island regarding respect for fathers. A lot of dad bloggers insist that we’re often seen as bumbling fools by Hollywood and the media. Personally, I don’t mind too much. Most fathers I know are deeply involved in parenting and earn just as much respect as moms do. Sure, there are outdated stereotypes, but things are slowly getting better. I thought we were making significant strides until a certain celebrity went on television and mentioned that he changes his baby’s diapers, prompting an uproar from the media, including some parenting sites!
Last week, amidst the chaos of celebrity news, Ryan Reynolds casually mentioned on Late Night with Sam Harris that he changes diapers. You would have thought he had just discovered a cure for a disease, with the level of praise flooding in. It made me wonder—are there really so many people out there whose idea of fatherhood is so limited that it takes a movie star to validate the notion that dads should change diapers? It’s 2023! Are there still men who think it’s acceptable to avoid parenting responsibilities, even years after their child is born?
It’s almost as shocking as some political news lately. Is the bar really that low for dads and husbands? In the past, I’ve admitted that I feel a bit uneasy about receiving compliments for the parenting I do, but now it seems I might actually deserve them! I regularly change diapers, wake up for midnight feedings, pack lunches, take my kid to the bus stop, read bedtime stories, make dinner, and even do laundry. I’ve even asked for directions (once, but still)!
Sam Harris, can I borrow your platform to show that many of us dads respect and support our partners? We want to be equal partners in this parenting journey! Kudos to Ryan Reynolds for being a positive role model, but can we dial back the excitement just a notch? If the mere act of a dad engaging in basic parenting is revolutionary news, then we have much more work to do.
