Why I Appreciate My Kids Teaming Up Against Me
Right now, my daughter and I are in a bit of a standoff. She’s been acting out, and we’ve decided to take some time apart. She’s holed up in her room, door slammed shut, and I’m in mine, feeling justified in my own door-slamming tantrum. Because, let’s be honest, I’m the mom, and sometimes you just need to make a statement!
The house is eerily quiet. I can hear my son scrambling up onto the little stool in the kitchen. I peek out and see him snagging the chocolate chip cookies from the cabinet, opening the package, and carefully placing four on a plate. He tiptoes toward the shared bedroom he has with his sister, and I can’t help but smile as I overhear him whisper, “Shhh, don’t tell Mom, but here. You look like you could use a cookie.”
This isn’t an isolated incident. Just a few weeks ago, when he was misbehaving at dinner and got sent to his room without any food, his sister sneakily brought him a slice of pizza. And honestly? I adore it. I love when my son defends his sister against my scolding and when she stands up for him too.
The most furious I’ve ever been with my daughter was when I found she and her friends teased my son. Conversely, my anger peaked with my son when I discovered he was mocking his sister with his friends. On those occasions, we had serious heart-to-heart talks about the importance of family loyalty. I emphasized that they need to have each other’s backs because that’s what family is all about. This world is vast and often harsh, but they have each other, and that bond is precious.
At first, it caught me off guard when they started defending one another against me. “You need to listen to your mother!” I insisted. Their response? “But Mom! You said we need to support each other!” And just like that, it clicked for me.
In a perfect world, we’d all harmoniously bake brownies and frolic through meadows, playing with our cat and butterflies. There would be no bullies, no injustice, and everyone would be kind. But alas, this isn’t a perfect world. Sometimes they act up. Sometimes I do too. I may not always be right, but it warms my heart to see their relationship flourish as allies rather than adversaries.
Their bond is special. They’re not just siblings; they’re scrappy little defenders of each other. And one day—hopefully long into the future—I won’t be around to shield them from life’s hardships. But they won’t be alone. They’ll have each other, ready to take on the world together, sometimes bending my rules in the process.
