10 Common Misconceptions Working Moms Encounter
As a parent, I’ve worn many hats: full-time working mom, part-time employee, stay-at-home caretaker, and work-from-home guru. Regardless of the role, there are certain things you just shouldn’t say to a mom—especially to one who is juggling the demands of motherhood, a career, friendships, and partnership. While supportive words are often appreciated, some comments simply don’t hit the mark. Here are ten things working moms would rather not hear:
- “I could never let someone else raise my kids.”
Oh please, it’s not all or nothing. Just because I have help doesn’t mean I don’t do the homework help, dinner prep, or bedtime snuggles. - “Kids are the most important thing. I make time for what’s important.”
This one is beyond me. - “You spent all day without your kids; why do you need an hour to yourself?”
Because I’m not a robot, and my entire day was spent meeting everyone else’s needs! - “You’ll realize no amount of money is worth the time you’re missing.”
Spot on! But could you let my mortgage lender know that? I’m sure they’d be thrilled. - “I don’t know how you do it all.”
This is a joke, right? - From colleagues: “Your kids are sick? Can’t someone else take care of them?”
If only it were that simple. Daycares have rules, and guess who your kids want when they’re feeling crummy? - “It must be nice to get away.”
Absolutely! I do a little happy dance every time I leave my loved ones. - “Cutting back could let you stay home with your kids.”
My kids have been rocking hand-me-downs since day one. And have you seen my retro minivan? It’s paid off and staying that way! (Oh, and I might even enjoy my job.) - “Good for you for putting yourself first!”
Oops! I thought this was about everyone else. My mistake. - “Good for you for doing what it takes.”
Let’s be real: I don’t have to do this—I get to. I’m the first face my kids see each day, the one who tucks them in at night, and I get to help provide for our family and pursue my passions.
Being a working mom is a balancing act, and while it comes with challenges, I treasure every moment. I’m setting an example for my kids about hard work and dedication, both at home and in the workplace.
