“I was instantly captivated by this moment,” Thompson shared with Home Insemination Kit. “The first birth I documented was on June 12th, 2015. I can still recall it vividly! I went home and told my partner in the middle of the night that I wanted a baby too. I felt there was such an abundance of love in that room, I knew I’d be smiling for the rest of my life just reminiscing about it. It’s true; photographing births becomes somewhat addictive because of the joy it brings.”

Since that first moment, Thompson has been on a mission to document the arrival of new lives. To date, she has photographed over 120 births, featuring that magical moment in a collection she aptly named The First Moments. “So many emotions converge during this experience: joy, relief, wonder, pride, love, euphoria, and contentment, alongside a myriad of reactions—smiles and tears,” she blogs about her series. “There are moments of silence followed by bursts of extreme joy.
