To My Husband on His First Year as a Dad
Dear James,
Can you believe it? Our little one is nearly a year old! It feels surreal, especially after our heartfelt chat tonight about how fast this year has flown by.
It seems like just yesterday when I called you, my voice trembling with nervous excitement, saying that I had just left the doctor’s office and was heading to the hospital because our baby was on the way. You rushed to meet me, still in your scrubs after cutting your hospital shift short, and your calming presence eased my worries immediately.
Almost a year has passed since that rainy morning last spring when our son made his grand entrance. Through the changing seasons, I’ve watched you step into fatherhood effortlessly. It was as if you were born to be a dad from the moment our boy arrived.
I’ll never forget that afternoon when you changed our son’s diaper for the first time without a hint of hesitation. And that night, when his cries jolted us awake, you sprang into action, navigating the bleary darkness of our hospital room like a pro.
When we were told on our third day that our little man wouldn’t be coming home with us due to jaundice and weight loss, I leaned against you as I struggled with overwhelming emotions. That was my first taste of new motherhood—terrifying and unfamiliar. But you were my rock, offering strength when I felt like I was falling apart.
During our breastfeeding struggles, you listened to the lactation consultants with the same intensity as I did. While I pumped every hour, you were there, cheering me on, visiting our son in the nursery, and making me laugh with silly jokes to lift my spirits.
Those early weeks at home were a whirlwind of sleepless nights, postpartum night sweats, and endless feedings. You stood by me, sharing the journey of fatherhood as I was learning the ropes of motherhood. I appreciated you then, though it was like savoring water when lost in the desert—urgent but not yet fully understood.
Watching you become a father has been like watching someone uncover a hidden talent. You embraced this new role with ease, creating sweet nicknames and new traditions while I was still grappling with the reality of our son. You made bath time a cozy adventure, warming the bathroom and playing classical music, while I was just trying to keep up.
You’ve always understood that a mother’s love and guilt weigh heavily, calming my worries with thoughtful gifts like crème brûlée and little cards.
Of course, we faced challenges too. I’d heard from friends that the arrival of a first child can test a marriage. In those first days after our son was born, I couldn’t imagine being upset with you, but sleepless nights and frayed nerves sometimes led to tension, especially when you returned to work. Yet, as we adapted to our new roles, we grew stronger together.
When it was time for me to return to work after four months, it was you who wiped my tears and reassured me that our bond with our son wouldn’t change. You helped me learn to embrace the chaos and let go of control.
Now, as we celebrate this past year, I see how much our son has grown, and I’ve grown alongside him—thanks to you. I still can’t believe it’s almost been a year since you became a father, but I’m so grateful to have shared this incredible journey with you.
