Restaurant in Hot Water Over High Chair Dilemma
A Canadian dad claims he’s facing discrimination at Earls Kitchen and Bar because they didn’t have high chairs available for his little one. Yes, you read that right—a human rights hearing is on the table because of high chairs. Talk about taking things to the next level!
Phillip McDonald, the frustrated father, alleges that on two separate occasions, he was told by restaurant staff that high chairs were not part of their policy. His dining adventures began at an Earls location in February, where he was reportedly told they could not provide a high chair for his one-year-old. He then tried another location later that month, with the same disappointing result. According to court documents obtained by CBC News, McDonald felt more like a crusader for parental rights than a diner simply trying to enjoy a meal.
On the other side, Earls insists there’s no policy against high chairs and welcomes families with open arms. Cate Lee, a spokesperson for the chain, mentioned in an email to CBC that about half of their locations do offer high chairs and boosters, but the availability varies depending on the clientele in each area. “We don’t have a policy prohibiting high chairs,” she stated. “In some locations, requests for high chairs are rare.”
Earls also claims they offered McDonald a spacious booth to accommodate him and his baby. Naturally, he turned it down, saying it would be “stressful” and “less enjoyable.” Well, let’s be real—taking a toddler out to eat can be stressful no matter how many high chairs are around!
While it’s understandable that parents expect certain amenities in family-friendly places, equating this situation to human rights violations seems a bit over the top. Restaurants have the right to manage their space as they see fit. If you’re not happy with the high chair situation, why not just take your business elsewhere?
Parenting is challenging enough without adding legal battles into the mix. It’s unfortunate that some venues can’t cater to every need, but that doesn’t mean there’s a conspiracy against parents. High chairs are a nice convenience, but they’re certainly not a human right.

In summary, while a lack of high chairs at a restaurant can be frustrating for parents, taking a legal route may not be the best solution. The reality is that not all eateries will meet every family’s needs.
