Hilarious PSA About the Absurd Price of Childcare: It’s No Laughing Matter
Updated: Aug. 2, 2023
Who knew that raising a child these days would cost more than a luxury car? In fact, in many parts of the U.S., sending your 4-year-old to preschool can cost more than a year of college for an adult. Wait, what?
Once upon a time, parents fretted over saving for college, but now, by the time kids hit kindergarten, many families are already financially wiped out. We often hear the phrase, “Don’t have kids you can’t afford,” but honestly, it sounds more ridiculous with each passing year. How on earth do you prepare for this financial rollercoaster?
A recent PSA features adorable little ones to soften the blow of a stark reality: childcare costs are downright outrageous. “The average childcare cost is about $11,000 per child, per year,” says a pint-sized financial guru to his “client,” who appears to be around four years old. “If you start saving now, maybe in 20 years you’ll manage to afford your kids’ childcare… kinda.”
“I’ll be real with you,” he continues, “you’ll be barely scraping by.”
I can relate. My kiddo is in part-time preschool because that’s all we can swing. It’s $400 a month for him to attend four days a week for just three hours. Full-time? That’d be a whopping $900. Meanwhile, our three-year-old is in daycare for two days a week, costing us an additional $450 monthly. If we wanted full-time for both, we’d be coughing up $1,950 each month. That’s more than our rent!
So, for a couple of part-time care options, we’re shelling out over $10,000 a year. Next year, one kiddo will be in kindergarten, which should ease the burden a bit. But do we really want to start paying $600 a month for just the other child’s part-time daycare? We’re already exhausted from watching our bank account dwindle to zero every month.
This PSA comes from an organization called Make It Work. Their mission? “America needs sensible workplace policies and bold solutions that help everyone make it work.” They’re on a mission to change the narrative around work and family because 2023 is here, and hardworking folks deserve more than just a paycheck; they deserve a fulfilling life.
Feeling inspired? You can take action by pledging to support candidates who endorse solutions that help us all “make it work,” such as:
- Equal pay for equal work
- A living wage
- Paid time off for sick days or family care
- Affordable childcare and elder care
Let’s face it, we all deserve more than just scraping by.
