To All the Moms on My Facebook Feed
Hey there, fellow moms scrolling through my Facebook feed! What you see is just a fleeting moment of my chaotic life as a parent—a snapshot, really. Let’s be honest, it’s more like a millisecond of the picture-perfect moments I want to share.
Take this adorable photo I captured of my kids perched on the windowsill, engrossed in watching some birds (so sweet, right?). But just moments before, my older son was wrestling a hockey puck from his younger sibling, yelling, “He cheated!” (yes, he’s a dramatic 2-year-old). And not long after that, the little one was sprawled on the floor in tears because his puck was wedged under the air hockey table, refusing any help with a stubborn, “I do it meself!”
Yet, for that brief second on the windowsill, they were calm, chatting about birds and ducks, genuinely enjoying each other’s company. I was soaking it all in, relishing that slice of joy, so naturally, I snapped a picture to share with you.
I also talk about the moments when they drive me up the wall, usually with a sense of humor. I appreciate your support as I let off steam. Some might think I overshare, but I also want to highlight the beautiful moments with my kids.
I’m not sharing to flaunt my parenting skills or to suggest my kids are better behaved or happier than yours because trust me, they aren’t. Some of you I know well, while others I’ve only met briefly. I’m sharing these glimpses to celebrate the beauty in our lives, for my own sake. I want to focus on those moments amidst the 80% of my day spent cleaning, cooking, breaking up sibling squabbles, explaining rules, and indulging in stolen chocolate bites. It’s therapeutic to embrace these instances of peace, insight, and love.
And I love seeing your lives too—your joys, struggles, and laughter. Each facet you share is a glimpse into the beauty of your world. I understand that you’re not showing everything, and that’s perfectly fine. I often wish we could just gather on porches and chat after a long day. Social media is great, but it can’t replace those real connections.
I recognize that sometimes my celebratory posts might sting if you’re having a tough time. I truly apologize for that. I know how easy it is for us moms to compare ourselves with each other. If my posts ever make you feel less than, please know you can unfollow or unfriend me without hurting my feelings. We’re all just navigating this wild ride called motherhood.
But I want you to remember: you are a brave, interesting, freaking amazing mom, no matter how you view yourself. Let’s keep it real—what I share is just a fraction of my life, and believe me, it’s much messier and more intricate than my posts suggest. Yours is too, and that’s as it should be.
So here’s to all of us, sharing our moments, the beautiful and the chaotic alike. In summary, motherhood is a journey filled with ups and downs, moments of joy and chaos. Let’s celebrate the beauty in both, while we navigate this together.
