The other day, as soon as my daughter hopped into the car after school, she launched into a tirade of whining and complaining. She snapped at her brother, shot us glares, and was just all-around grumpy. In short, she was definitely channeling her inner jerk.
Now, before you start judging my parenting skills based on my choice of words, let’s clear something up: I didn’t call her a jerk outright; I just observed her behavior. And while I didn’t express this to her (although I was tempted), it was particularly frustrating since she’s usually a great kid.
But here’s the reality: all kids can have their off days. Even the most gentle and sweet-natured children can sometimes turn into little monsters. Maybe they’re too hot, too cold, overtired, or just in a mood. Who knows! But at some point, every child can display jerk-like behavior.
If you’re curious whether your child’s antics have crossed into jerk territory, here’s a lighthearted list of 25 ways kids can act like total jerks:
- Throwing a fit in the middle of the snack aisle because they didn’t get the “chocolate milk.”
- Declaring their love for their other parent more than for you.
- Finishing the last cookie and putting the empty box back in the pantry.
- Whining incessantly.
- Rolling their eyes as if they’re auditioning for a drama.
- Refusing to use the bathroom, which then leads to messy consequences for all of us.
- Whacking their sibling with a foam sword during a “friendly” duel.
- Insisting they don’t need to go potty right before a long car trip, only to shout that they need a bathroom as soon as we hit the road.
- Using a plastic toy to take a swing at their sister.
- Calling us the “Meanest Parent” when we announce it’s bath time.
- Deciding pants are optional while attending a formal event.
- Critiquing everything we do: wrong street, wrong shirt, wrong way to build a Lego tower.
- Knocking over a magnificent Lego tower we spent hours building at their request.
- Kicking us in the gut, head, and more when they decide to co-sleep with us.
- Telling us the dinner we slaved over tastes like “soggy socks.”
- Pointing out every wrinkle on our faces and every flaw on our bodies.
- Ignoring our texts asking if they made it home safe or what they’d like for dinner.
- Wishing we were more like their friend’s parents.
- Stashing dirty clothes under their bed until they start to smell like a science experiment.
- Lying about trivial things.
- Lying about serious matters.
- Responding to our questions about their day with one-word answers or grunts.
- Leaving us behind to hang out with their friends.
- “Borrowing” our clothes, especially the ones they declared were “so ugly” just a few years back.
- Growing up way too fast. Seriously, how did we get here?
As you can see, kids can definitely act like jerks from time to time—often! But despite all the chaos, we love our little rascals. Their antics often lead to some pretty entertaining stories.
