When I was a kid, spanking wasn’t a major issue, but it was a whole different ballgame for my parents, and even more so for my grandparents. If we go back far enough, I’m pretty sure my great-grandparents were subjected to some medieval punishment. But nothing could prepare them for the absurdity of this tale.
In Japan, a young boy was unceremoniously taken from his family’s car during a road trip and left by the roadside in the forest to learn a lesson. A lesson? Really? Seven-year-old Kai Tanaka was meant to be taught a lesson about misbehavior, but instead, he ended up surviving on his own for six long days.
According to reports from The Guardian, military personnel found him after he spent a week in woods that, oh by the way, just happened to be inhabited by bears. At seven years old, the last thing you’d want is to be alone in a bear-infested forest! And to top it off, this was on Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island—because, of course, it couldn’t get any worse.
The doctor who examined Kai was astonished by his calm demeanor, stating, “He was incredibly composed, considering he had been missing for seven days.” Why was he so calm? Perhaps he was secretly plotting revenge—because this is precisely how superheroes and supervillains come to life!
Imagine the resilience it takes for a kid to survive such an ordeal with just a few scrapes. Having faced this harrowing experience, young Kai is likely to grow into someone who knows he can handle anything life throws at him—even if it involves a bear or two. He might even develop into a masked vigilante, roaming the woods to protect others from careless parents.
But what if one day, while driving his parents home from visiting their grandkids, he decides to drop them off in those same bear-infested woods? I have a hunch they wouldn’t last long out there. After all, they left their own child in the wilderness with no food or water for an extended period because he was “misbehaving.” Seriously, he’s just a kid! Kids act out in cars. Mine do it all the time! They probably didn’t plan on leaving him there for days—if it turns out they were off enjoying movies while he was missing, I might just have to don a bear suit myself!
The father expressed sorrow, saying, “The first thing I told him was that I was really sorry.” And Kai nodded like he understood. But guess what, Dad? Nobody understands how a parent could do that to their child—especially not a seven-year-old.
