In a bold move, JC Penney has launched the #HereIAm campaign, empowering women to share their personal journeys and embrace body positivity. “Would my life improve if I were slimmer? Not at all. But it would certainly be better if society didn’t treat me poorly because of my size,” says Lucy Burrows, the voice behind the campaign and author of Things No One Will Tell Plus-Size Women. And trust me, that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
This initiative features stories from plus-size women, aiming to dismantle stereotypes and encourage self-love. “At 10, I dreamed of being a singer, but a family member told me, ‘Sorry kid, that’s not for you,’” shares Bella Harper, a Grammy-nominated artist who appears in the ad. The lineup includes fashion influencer Mia Bright, designer and Project Runway winner, Grace Taylor, and wellness advocate Janie Rivers.
“Fat girls can do anything,” the ad boldly declares. “We can practice yoga, scale mountains, run marathons, and yes, even shine on magazine covers while rocking stripes and vibrant colors.” As Burrows enthusiastically states, “There’s no hiding this body when I walk into a room. That’s a powerful realization, especially when you’ve been conditioned to disappear.”
The campaign cuts through the noise of body shaming and gets straight to the heart of the matter: you are you—no matter what the scale says. “We’re challenging years of internalized negativity,” Burrows asserts. And they are doing it with a message that everyone needs to hear: self-acceptance is key.
These women are owning their space and it’s truly inspiring. When you embrace who you are, no one can bring you down. As Taylor aptly puts it, “The only person who gets to define me is me.”
