Let’s Stop Criticizing Parents for Every Little Choice They Make

In our current society, there’s an alarming trend of judging and shaming parents for every decision they make—or don’t make. Whether you’re at the playground, zoo, or just scrolling through social media, there’s no shortage of comments, side-eyes, and snickers directed at parents trying to do their best.

It seems like everyone believes they’ve mastered the art of parenting and is eager to share their opinions. I often find myself thinking, “Wow, I wish I could be as flawless as you all seem to be!” From swearing in front of our kids to the choices we make about breastfeeding, preschool, and organic foods, the list goes on and on. Each day, from the moment we welcome our little ones home—well, even before that—we face a myriad of decisions that will shape their lives. Some choices carry more weight than others, but the relentless scrutiny of parents for their parenting choices is exhausting.

We do our utmost to parent well. We recognize the importance of not sweating the small stuff, and most importantly, we know what’s best for our children—regardless of what other parents may think.

As a mom of a spirited 7-year-old and with another child on the way, I certainly don’t claim to be a parenting guru. But I have some observations that might resonate with others.

Swearing in front of your children and the other everyday decisions we fret over—those late-night worries that keep us up and provoke judgment from fellow parents—aren’t what truly impact our kids’ lives. The significant matters are far simpler: Are your kids clothed? Fed? Taken to regular doctor visits? If you’re reading this parenting article, I’m guessing your answers are a resounding “yes.”
