Mom’s Culinary Creations: When Lunch Becomes Art

One mom transforms her child’s meals into edible masterpieces.

Recently, I served my kids dinner on those divided plates, featuring sweet potato fries, hot dogs, peas, and applesauce. I drizzled ketchup in a zigzag pattern over the hot dogs and crafted smiley faces out of peas. Proud of my culinary creativity, I took a moment to admire my work.

However, my efforts pale in comparison to the artistic feats of one remarkably talented mother. Meet Sarah Johnson from Sydney, Australia, whose knack for turning everyday food into stunning art is downright impressive. Inspired by her son, she launched an Instagram account named “Max’s Food Chronicles,” which has nearly 50,000 followers.

“I’ve always championed healthy, organic eating for children,” Sarah explains. “Last May, I decided to shape Max’s spelt pancakes into a lion. He loved it, and that sparked a whole new hobby!” Now, Max suggests characters for Sarah to recreate, whether they’re from a book, movie, or something he spotted that day.

So, she crafts whatever character he desires? Sarah, could you whip me up a taco resembling Jon Snow? Thanks, I’ll be waiting.

In a twist, Sarah shared that Max even munched on the octopus she used to create Hank from Finding Dory, while she herself was less enthusiastic. “I was shocked he didn’t turn up his nose at it! I helped prepare it, but those tentacles were huge!”

To each their own; I think I’ll stick with food that doesn’t have tentacles when preparing meals for my kids!

All jokes aside, Sarah’s creations are simply astounding. Here’s a look at some of her mind-blowing culinary art:

  • An avocado shaped like Kermit? Count me in!
  • Goofy made from an entire rainbow of food groups.
  • And of course, Ursula crafted from—what else?—a delightful octopus.

This chicken, spinach, and cucumber Yoda is a true masterpiece. Please don’t show it to my son who adores Star Wars; I can’t compete!

While I’m more than willing to buy themed plates featuring Elsa from Frozen, I doubt I’ll ever reach Sarah’s level of artistic food preparation. Her passion for getting her child to try a variety of foods is commendable, as is her extraordinary talent.

But if you ever see me attempting this kind of food artistry to entice my kids to eat, do me a favor: send help!
