Expert Suggests Bras Should Be Cleaned Every Three Wears, Women Everywhere LOL
Let’s face it, most of us aren’t washing our bras nearly enough. Many moms are probably guilty of skipping a laundry day or two (or three) when it comes to these essential garments. With everything else going on in life, it’s easy to let self-care slip through the cracks. But fear not, some enlightening bra wisdom is on the way!
London-based lingerie experts at Rigby & Peller recently shared some valuable tips with The Huffington Post on everything from achieving the perfect fit to the best washing practices. Boutique manager for their 5th Avenue location in New York City, Mia Thompson, claims that you should wash your bras every three wears.
Three wears? How about every three months, Mia? That would be a dream!
Once you’re done chuckling, here’s the kicker—Mia emphasizes that those three wears shouldn’t be consecutive. In other words, it’s time to rotate those bras and avoid wearing the same one every single day. I’m hoping I’m not alone in my bra favoritism; I definitely have one that I reach for continually.
According to Mia, a well-rounded bra collection should ideally consist of 7-10 bras, which should include a sports bra, a strapless option, and a convertible style. But let’s be honest, most women tend to wear only a couple of bras regularly. Where are my fellow one-bra warriors? You’re not alone!
Mia also stresses the importance of being gentle with your lingerie. It’s much more delicate than your regular laundry. “The best option is to hand wash with a lingerie detergent. But let’s be real—I know life is hectic, so if you must use a machine, many have a hand wash or delicate cycle. Just be sure to close the bras and use a wash bag. And once they’re clean, hang them to dry.”
Yeah, about that hand-washing thing… It’s not happening in my household. I’m lucky if I remember to move my laundry from the washer to the dryer before it becomes a science experiment!
Mia also offers some crucial advice regarding proper fit. If you haven’t had a fitting in ages—or ever—do yourself a favor and get measured ASAP. You might be shocked at the size you should actually be wearing! A well-fitting bra can transform how you look and feel, and it can even change how your clothes fit. “You need a snug band. A loose band can cause your breast tissue to sag when it should be lifted. Clients often find that once they get the right cup size, everything falls into place,” she says.
So, wearing the right bra size could potentially allow me to wear a smaller clothing size? Off to the lingerie boutique I go!
Mia’s final piece of advice is to care for your bras just like you do for your regular clothing. As I gaze at my mixed whites and darks hanging out at the bottom of the washer since early this morning, I think, “Sure, I’ll get right on that.”
