Parenting in the Digital Age: How Did Previous Generations Manage?
As wonderful as parenting can be (bear with me), it’s not without its challenges. Shocking, right? Who would have thought that dedicating the majority of your life to guiding young, sometimes clueless children could occasionally be a drag? Well, brace yourself for the truth: it can be. Not all the time, but often enough to notice. Sure, the highs are exhilarating, but they don’t always outshine the lows.
Surviving those low moments is key, and believe it or not, it’s become easier than ever—thanks to technology!
Even if you’re convinced that parenting is just an endless parade of joyous moments and enlightening experiences, you have to admit: it can be mind-numbingly dull. When your kids are tiny, your days are filled with just trying to keep them alive, tidy, and fed. There’s no way to keep them entertained every minute of the day, and even if there were, you’d probably need a rescue mission for your sanity. Kids thrive on activities that, let’s face it, can be a bit tedious for adults. Sure, I enjoy building pillow forts and playing with Lego alongside my son, but let’s be honest—it gets exhausting fast.
Sometimes, a parent just needs a break. Maybe I want to catch up on chores, tackle some bills, or just enjoy a moment of adult time. You don’t know my life, so let’s just say it’s complicated! So, what do I do when I need a breather? I hand my kid my phone or tablet, or I queue up some Netflix. It’s a lifesaver, and honestly, it’s a necessity.
I truly don’t understand how my parents managed without these modern conveniences. Or how their parents did it, for that matter. (I do know how my great-grandparents coped: they sent the kids out to tend the fields or work in factories.) Keeping kids entertained is a full-time job. Just this morning, I was typing away when my son declared, “I’m bored!” at 9:24 a.m. on his very first day of summer vacation. Engaging with them is a blast, but taking a step back to handle my own tasks is perfectly acceptable. And modern gadgets make that possible in a way that’s never been easier.
Sure, there are some concerns about relying too much on technology to keep our kids occupied (and ourselves too), but let’s not overlook the benefits. When used wisely, technology can be both essential and enriching. There are countless educational apps and games for kids, and if you think that tech skills won’t be crucial for their future, you might want to rethink that.
You might view it as a justification, and if I were the type to let my iPad babysit my five-year-old, I’d get it. But I don’t do that. I keep an eye on his screen time and will continue to do so. However, if it makes my life easier sometimes, I’m all for it.
I’d much rather see my energetic, sometimes clingy son happily playing a game on my phone for a bit than find myself stressed out and snapping at him for just being a kid. I’m not ashamed of needing a quick break from my children, and nothing helps me recharge quite like a bit of technology.

Summary:
Parenting in today’s tech-savvy world offers conveniences that previous generations could only dream of. While it’s essential to engage with our children, taking a breather every now and then is perfectly acceptable. Technology serves as a helpful ally in finding that balance, allowing parents to manage their responsibilities while still providing enriching experiences for their kids.
