Overdue Mom-to-Be Tries Wakesurfing to Kickstart Labor
When you’re 40 weeks pregnant and showing no signs of labor, desperation can kick in. I remember my pregnancies stretched to 42 weeks, and trust me, I tried everything—chiropractors, acupressure, spicy foods, and even marching around the neighborhood like a confused penguin. But none of those methods were as thrilling as what one adventurous mom decided to do.
Meet Jenna Thompson from Minneapolis, Minnesota. At 40 weeks pregnant, she thought, “Why not throw on my swimsuit and try wakesurfing to nudge this baby along?” Spoiler alert: it didn’t work, because as any experienced parent knows, babies arrive on their own schedule. However, Jenna’s attempt created some epic video footage.
“Well, you know I had to,” Jenna quipped. “Maybe wakesurfing will get things going. Come out, little one! We’ve enjoyed each other’s company, but it’s time to meet you.” By this point, she was nearing 41 weeks—definitely long enough to consider issuing an eviction notice.
Jenna explained to ABC News, “People mix up wakesurfing with wakeboarding or water-skiing. When you wakeboard, you’re zipping along at 25 miles an hour. Wakesurfing, though, is a leisurely 9 or 10 miles per hour behind a specially designed boat. It’s safe and low-impact! If I fell, it’d be like jumping into a pool.”
As expected, the internet trolls soon emerged to criticize Jenna for her “irresponsible” choice. Oh, the internet—so consistently predictable.
Just five days later, baby Leo made his grand entrance. While wakesurfing had nothing to do with it, he’ll always have this cool story about his adventurous mom. “He’s incredible,” Jenna shared. “I was told I’d never get pregnant, so it feels surreal. Plus, he’s got this glorious long hair—my little surfer dude!”
