Tattoo Artist Gives a Bullied Boy’s Back Brace a Stunning Makeover
No kid wants to be the center of attention, especially when they’re navigating the treacherous waters of middle school. At 12 years old, dealing with puberty is tough enough, but throw in a back brace that has to be worn outside their clothing, and it can feel like a nightmare come to life. When Jennifer Miller’s son, Oliver, found himself in this predicament, his mom decided to think outside the box.
After a doctor’s visit revealed that Oliver would need to wear a back brace longer than expected due to his scoliosis, Jennifer turned to Facebook for help. “Oliver is going to be wearing this brace for a while. It’s meant to help him straighten out as he grows,” she shared. “Last year he wore it under his shirt but it’s really noticeable, and he was teased a lot.” Feeling the weight of her son’s struggles, she reached out to her community for support.
Enter Orlando-based tattoo artist, Carlos Vega, the owner of Rebel Ink Tattoos. He spotted Jennifer’s post and immediately reached out, eager to create an awesome design for Oliver at no cost. “I couldn’t believe how quickly it all came together,” Jennifer said, thrilled by the community outpouring of support. Carlos has a heart for helping others—he even offered free tattoos to honor the victims of the tragic Pulse nightclub shooting.
The creative team got to designing and ultimately crafted a jaw-dropping ocean-themed artwork for Oliver’s brace. The piece features a mesmerizing night scene with dark silhouettes of trees, a mystical moon, and a fierce-looking shark gliding through vibrant blue and purple waters. “I was in tears! I never thought it would turn out so beautifully detailed,” Jennifer exclaimed. “It may seem small, but to my son, it means the world!”
So how did Oliver react to his snazzy new brace? “He was blown away and couldn’t wait to show it off at school!” his mom beamed. Now, with a little less worry about those pesky bullies, Oliver can strut into school with newfound confidence. Jennifer added, “I’m beyond grateful that something as simple as this has given my son a boost and put a smile on his face.”
