A woman’s cherished dog defied the odds just to witness her tie the knot. Sarah Jenkins and her 15-year-old pup, Max, shared a bond that was unbreakable. Rescued by a vet from a shopping cart as a young puppy, Max had been by Sarah’s side through thick and thin. When he fell ill, Sarah desperately hoped he’d hold on long enough to attend her wedding to another veterinarian, and somehow, Max managed to pull through.
According to Sarah’s wedding photographer, “They were determined to have him there because he’s like her soul mate.”
In a touching piece by The Daily Chronicle, Sarah revealed she wasn’t searching for a dog when she met Max, but once she brought him home that winter day, her life changed forever. They moved from New York to sunny California, trained for marathons together, and eventually settled down with her fiancé, Tom Reynolds. However, disaster struck when Max was diagnosed with a brain tumor earlier this year. The prognosis was grim.
“I had even scheduled a vet to come to our home to help him pass just a week before the wedding. After five seizures, we thought it was time to let him go,” Sarah recalled. “But then it was like he decided, ‘Nope, I want to be there.’ He started to improve.”
Max managed to muster just enough strength to walk down the aisle, although he needed a little help getting back up. Thankfully, Sarah’s sister, and maid of honor, carried him back to his spot. Wedding photographer Jenna Marshall captured the moment beautifully and shared her thoughts online: “This is true love in action—love for family, love for animals, and love for each other. It was spontaneous and pure.”
Overwhelmed with gratitude, Sarah knelt to hug Max once he was settled down the aisle. “I kept saying, ‘You made it, buddy, you made it,’” she expressed, as Max wore a big, happy grin. Although she worried about whether she was pushing him too hard, Sarah ultimately felt he wanted to be there. “Looking at the photos, especially the ones with flowers around him, I can tell he was so happy. He just wanted to see us come together and ensure I’d be taken care of.”
Sadly, Max was laid to rest a few days after the wedding, but Sarah will forever cherish these final precious memories of her four-legged friend. The images of him adorned with flowers post-ceremony, which she described as “priceless, absolutely priceless,” will always remind her of the incredible effort her beloved dog made to be part of her special day.
