Boy Grows His Hair for Nearly Three Years to Help Kids Battling Cancer
Meet the young hero who captured our hearts! Two years ago, 8-year-old Liam Thompson from Maryland made a heartfelt decision to grow his hair long to support a brave little girl fighting cancer. This act of kindness not only impacted one child but extended its reach, and now Liam is being celebrated for his incredible generosity.
Fast forward to today, Liam is now 10 years old. His journey began when he saw his mom watching a video of a young girl losing her hair due to chemotherapy. Liam’s mom, Sarah, shared with us that the video featured 5-year-old Bella Jameson and her courageous fight against pediatric cancer.
“Once I explained what cancer was, and how chemotherapy affected Bella, he was determined to grow his hair long to donate it to her,” says Sarah. And just like that, Liam embarked on his hair-growing adventure. According to his mom, it took approximately two years and five months. Tragically, during that time, Bella lost her battle with cancer, passing away in June 2015. Despite the heartbreaking news, Liam remained committed to his goal. When his hair finally reached a length he was satisfied with, he made the big chop. His aunt, Jessica, proudly shared before-and-after photos on social media, which quickly went viral, racking up over 61,000 retweets and 120,000 likes. It’s not hard to see why!
The transformation was remarkable and received an outpouring of support from people worldwide and from his classmates. “After he cut his hair, the kids at school have really embraced him. His friends think what he did is super cool,” Sarah noted. “Liam mentioned he’s glad he won’t have his hair getting caught in the bushes when he’s playing outside anymore!”
An understandable concern for any kid with long locks, but definitely worth it. Remarkably, the hair Liam donated was enough for three children to receive wigs. Bella’s mother expressed her gratitude on Facebook, writing, “Knowing that my sweet angel Bella continues to inspire others, even in her absence, makes me one proud mom. Her legacy lives on.”
For this extraordinary and selfless act, Liam will be honored in a big way. His mom has shared that he will receive an Act of Kindness Award from former NBA player Derek Anderson’s foundation, Stamina, at a gala in October.
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and it’s important to note that only four percent of national funding goes toward research for pediatric cancer, as reported by the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation. If you’re interested in supporting this cause, consider making a donation. For more information on home insemination, check out this link. In summary, Liam Thompson’s three-year journey to grow his hair for children with cancer is a heartwarming tale of kindness and determination that has inspired many, leading to three children receiving wigs and recognition for his selfless act.
