We all have those moments when stress hits like a freight train. Between the relentless barrage of depressing news, kids who seem to have an infinite supply of energy, bills piling up, work demands, and a to-do list that looks more like a novel, it’s no wonder we get a little… frazzled. Heck, sometimes I feel like I’m just one annoying email away from a complete meltdown.
Since throwing a tantrum like a toddler is generally frowned upon, I’ve had to explore some alternative ways to unwind. As an overworked mom, I can only take so many deep breaths or chant “ohm” before I start to resemble a disheveled character from a bad sitcom.
Here are a few tried-and-true methods to help you relax when the world feels like it’s spiraling out of control:
- Bob Ross and His Masterpieces
My partner and I recently joined the streaming age (yes, we were a bit behind), and thanks to a friend’s recommendation on social media, I discovered The Joy of Painting. Let me tell you, it was a game changer. Bob’s calming voice and gentle brush techniques can whisk me away to a tranquil state of bliss in no time. His soothing words, like “There are no mistakes, only happy accidents,” float around in my mind, making life feel a bit less chaotic and a lot more serene. Not all my coping mechanisms are healthy, but they sure are effective! Whether it’s a stash of chips, chocolate, or cookie dough, nothing brings comfort quite like a sugary binge. My current diet could be summed up as carbs and a sprinkle of hope. - Laughing at Epic Falls
There’s something undeniably funny about watching people take a tumble. I know, it’s a guilty pleasure, but it’s hard not to laugh at those cringe-worthy moments. - A Hot Bath—Just Kidding
Who am I kidding? That’s a fantasy. Unless you enjoy the constant chorus of mom-mom-mama through the door while you try to relax. - Retail Therapy
While Calgon might not be able to whisk me away, Amazon Prime certainly can. When I’m feeling overwhelmed, I dive into online shopping, whether it’s tracking down discontinued beauty products or buying clothes I’ll probably never wear. - Profanity as Therapy
Sometimes, a well-placed curse word is all it takes to calm those frayed nerves. Swearing can be incredibly cleansing! Let it out—shout a string of expletives so colorful they would make a sailor blush. Trust me, it feels great! - Cleaning in a Fit of Rage
I’ve heard this works wonders, but I can’t remember the last time I deep cleaned. That might be a sign I need to try it? - Kitchen Karaoke with ’80s Hits
When I’m feeling down, cranking up some ’80s music and dancing around the kitchen lifts my spirits. It’s amazing how a little nostalgia can boost your mood. - Vent Sessions with a Bestie
When I need a morale boost, I reach out to a close friend for a good old-fashioned rant. After venting, we usually end up reminiscing about high school or discussing our favorite TV shows—much more fun! - Sweary Inspirational Memes
I love a good inspirational quote, especially if it’s paired with a hilarious image. Sweary memes combine my love for cursing with a little bit of optimism, creating the perfect remedy for a rough day.
So, the next time you’re feeling overwhelmed, why not kick back with Bob Ross and a massive bowl of cookie dough ice cream? Immerse yourself in the bliss of happy trees and serene landscapes. If that doesn’t help with your stress, just remember: this too shall pass.
