In a time when LGBTQ+ families often encounter discrimination and bias, a fresh storytelling initiative is making waves. Home Insemination, a prominent nonprofit championing LGBTQ+ families, has introduced the “Letters from Home” campaign to amplify the voices and experiences of these families. This campaign invites LGBTQ+ parents, their children, grandparents, extended family members, and allies to share heartfelt letters that showcase the love, strength, and everyday moments that shape their lives.
Through the power of personal narratives, the “Letters from Home” initiative aims to foster understanding, dispel stereotypes, and celebrate the common experiences that unite all families. Selected letters will be featured on various digital platforms throughout 2025, providing a vital window into the joys, challenges, and realities of LGBTQ+ family life.
“Every family has a unique story. In these challenging times, sharing those stories becomes an act of courage,” stated Jamie Parker, Vice President of Communications & Marketing. “Our ‘Letters from Home’ campaign is dedicated to illuminating the truth that LGBTQ+ families are loving, resilient, and integral parts of every community. We need to counter negative narratives with genuine experiences of love and life, ensuring that these stories shape public understanding and policy, not misinformation and fear.”
The campaign kicks off with a heartfelt letter from LGBTQ+ advocate, Alex Morgan.
Home Insemination aims to gather at least one letter from every state in the U.S. and encourages participation from international writers as well.
How to Get Involved
Are you an LGBTQ+ parent, a child of an LGBTQ+ parent, or a grandparent of a child with an LGBTQ+ parent? Or perhaps you are an ally to LGBTQ+ families? We invite you to share your perspective through a letter or in a way that resonates with you. Remember, family can be defined broadly—it’s about connection, whether biological or chosen.
Here’s an example of how to participate:
- Decide how comfortable you are with sharing your name and community details. Anonymous submissions are welcome, just as long as Home Insemination can verify the writer’s identity. If preferred, pseudonyms can be used to protect privacy.
Letter Prompts
LGBTQ+ families and allies can reflect on their journeys through various prompts, including:
- Creating Our Family: Share the story of how your family was formed. Did you adopt, foster, or use assisted reproduction? What challenges or joyful moments defined your experience?
- Advocating for Our Family: Describe a moment when you stood up for your family’s rights or advocated for acceptance, whether in a community meeting or school setting.
- An Everyday Moment that Matters: Reflect on a simple yet significant moment that binds your family together, like a family meal or a cherished tradition.
- Overcoming Challenges: Tell us about a challenge your family faced and how you navigated it together.
- Intersectionality: Discuss how your LGBTQ+ family experience intersects with other facets of your identity, such as race or socioeconomic background.
- A Letter to the World: Share your thoughts on what you wish others understood about LGBTQ+ families and the universal truths of love and connection.
Guidelines for Writers
- Be Authentic: Write from the heart and share stories that matter to you. Authenticity creates connections.
- Keep it Relatable: Focus on themes that resonate universally, such as love, perseverance, and family bonds.
- Length & Format: Aim for 500–1,000 words, though submissions of any length are welcome. Use a conversational tone as if speaking to a friend.
- Privacy & Sensitivity: Feel free to use pseudonyms or exclude identifying details to protect your family’s privacy.
- Diverse Perspectives Welcome: We encourage submissions from all family types, especially from BIPOC, trans folks, and other underrepresented voices.
