Tiny Halloween Costumes for NICU Babies Bring Joy and Smiles
Halloween can be a spooky time for families, especially for those with little ones spending time in the NICU. But thanks to the heartwarming efforts of the March of Dimes and the dedicated staff at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, there’s a little less fright this season.
Who doesn’t love Halloween? Even the tiniest babies can enjoy the festivities, albeit in their own adorable way! This year, the folks at St. Luke’s and March of Dimes teamed up to create charming, handmade costumes for 35 NICU patients. Each baby received a delightful “Trick or Treat, smell my feet” card featuring their tiny footprints, a cozy hand-crocheted pumpkin brimming with goodies, and a Halloween-themed book for families to share together.
As Jennifer Thompson, a Communications Manager at March of Dimes, shared, “Families in the NICU might find themselves there for weeks or even months. This can be an emotional journey, and giving them a chance to celebrate Halloween helps restore a sense of normalcy and allows them to cherish their baby’s first milestones.”
While the babies may not have had the final say in their costumes, we can safely say they looked absolutely precious. From superhero capes to fluttery butterfly wings, even a Captain America shield and a Kansas City Royals jersey made appearances. The outfits were crafted with love, making the hospital’s tiniest patients look even more adorable.
Having experienced a brief NICU stay with my own little one, I can attest to the anxiety that comes with those moments. Thankfully, the compassionate actions of the March of Dimes and the remarkable nurses at St. Luke’s help families find joy amidst the uncertainty. While the babies donned their cute costumes, it was the thoughtful volunteers who truly saved the day.
