Poster Offers Women a Discreet Method to Navigate Potential Sexual Assault
A poster circulating in the U.K. introduces a clever code word for women who find themselves feeling uneasy on a date. The initiative, part of the “Ask for Angela” campaign, aims to provide a subtle escape route for women who may be in uncomfortable situations.
In 2016, amidst numerous high-profile sexual assault cases and an alarming cultural backdrop, seeing this poster in a pub bathroom in Lincolnshire was both a sad reminder of the times and a glimmer of hope. The poster, developed by the Lincolnshire County Council through their Community Safety Partnership, states: “Are you on a date that isn’t going well? Is your Tinder or POF date not quite what you expected? If things feel off, just head to the bar and ask for ‘Angela.’ The staff will understand you need assistance and can help you get a taxi or find a way out—without drawing attention.”
Hayley Green, a strategy coordinator for the council, explained to the Independent that these posters are part of the broader #NoMore campaign, which seeks to shift societal attitudes towards sexual violence, promote local services, and empower victims in their choices regarding reporting incidents.
While it’s commendable that Lincolnshire has implemented this initiative, it highlights a troubling reality: women shouldn’t have to resort to covert tactics just to ensure their safety. The creators of the poster and the bars that display it deserve praise for their efforts to provide a discreet safety net. However, it’s disheartening that women are still navigating a world rife with male privilege and systemic misogyny, often feeling unsafe or uncomfortable.
The fear of stigma and backlash can be overwhelming, making it vital for women to have reliable options. It’s unfortunate that communication has to be so coded to avoid provoking potentially dangerous men. Yet, the distressing narratives that have emerged, particularly following certain public figures’ remarks, underscore the necessity of such a solution.
So here we are: women face wage gaps, different societal expectations, victim-blaming, and now must behave like spies to avoid unwanted attention. What a world we live in.
In summary, the “Ask for Angela” initiative is a commendable effort to empower women and provide them with a discreet way to seek help in uncomfortable situations. It shines a light on the need for cultural change while also revealing the ongoing challenges women face in navigating safety and respect in social settings.
