Mom Delivers Baby in Car Outside Hospital, Faces Full Delivery Fee

When Jenna Thompson was gearing up for her third child, she thought she had everything planned out. Having successfully navigated a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) before, she had her birthing team ready and the hospital route mapped. However, life has a sense of humor, and instead of a calm hospital delivery, she welcomed her little one in the family SUV just steps away from the hospital entrance.

Jenna’s birth photographer, Mia Rodriguez, was on site to capture the moments she thought would unfold indoors. Instead, she found herself snapping incredible shots of the birth happening right in the parking lot, which quickly garnered attention online for their raw beauty.

While Jenna’s baby girl was healthy, the story took an unexpected twist once they were admitted to the hospital. “After we were checked in, they took the baby to the nursery for an examination. The neonatologist ordered a blood culture,” Jenna shared with Home Insemination Kit. Unfortunately, the nurse failed to properly clean the baby before the procedure, resulting in a positive test. This led to a 24-hour NICU stay and five rounds of antibiotics for the newborn.

After two subsequent tests came back negative, Jenna and her partner requested to be discharged, suspecting that the initial test had been contaminated. “The bacteria identified was staphylococcus hominis, which is typically found on human skin,” she pointed out. Despite the mix-up, the hospital billed them a whopping $4,000 for the NICU stay, which they argued was due to the hospital’s oversight.

But that wasn’t all—Jenna also received a bill for $7,431.45 for a delivery room charge, despite the fact that the baby was born in their Jeep. “I applaud the nurses who assisted during the delivery, but to charge for a full delivery fee when I wasn’t even admitted until after the placenta was delivered is absurd,” Jenna expressed in a Facebook Live post.

The hospital issued a statement claiming, “The services rendered were due to the complexities of a rapid labor and delivery.” They even dispatched three nurses and a midwife to support the delivery in the parking lot. Jenna recalled, “It was quite the scene, with nurses holding up sheets to create some privacy. It was both beautiful and chaotic.”

Reflecting on the experience, Jenna stated, “The first 24 hours were magical, but the next 24 felt like a nightmare, not knowing if there was something genuinely wrong with my baby. Maybe I should have just stayed home.”
