School Hosts Gun Safety Class for 2nd Graders Without Parental Notification
A recent incident at a Jacksonville elementary school has left one mother, Sarah Thompson, less than thrilled after discovering her 7-year-old son participated in a gun safety class without her consent. The program, known as Eddie Eagle, is sponsored by the NRA and aims to educate children about gun safety.
According to reports from Fox30Jax, Sarah was blindsided when her son returned home from Mandarin Oaks Elementary, armed with a pamphlet from the lesson. “Mom, you’re wrong! Toy guns are OK!” he exclaimed, leaving Sarah feeling as though her teachings about gun safety had been completely undermined. “They’ve just undone seven years of parenting in one hour,” she lamented.
While Duval County Public Schools usually informs parents about such programs and offers an opt-out option, this time they dropped the ball. The school superintendent acknowledged the oversight, stating that parents should have been notified. He defended the program, asserting that it was developed with input from education and public safety specialists. However, he also described the use of the Eddie Eagle character, a colorful and animated mascot, as a way to engage young kids with the subject matter.
Some might find it concerning that a topic as serious as gun safety is being presented in a way that could be seen as fun and engaging. “I’d prefer to make this topic frightening and excruciating,” Sarah quipped, comparing the NRA’s involvement to a tobacco company sponsoring health education.
Moving forward, it would be wise for schools to allow parents to take the lead on discussions about sensitive topics like gun safety, rather than springing them on unsuspecting families.
