Tales from the Pantsuit Nation: My Journey in a Pantsuit
I donned a pantsuit for my interview when a panel of high-profile law partners remarked they were relieved I didn’t sport a wedding ring; they feared I might derail their investment by becoming a mom. I wore my trusty pantsuit when a seasoned judge reminisced about how his successful male clerks had thrived, and he referred to his lone female clerk as “adorable,” just like me.
I wore a pantsuit to take the Virginia bar exam, despite the dress code suggesting skirts were the way to go. I wore it to court when a client insisted on firing me simply because he believed a woman couldn’t possibly handle defending him against attempted honor killing—emotions, you know.
Every day at my federal government job, I wore a pantsuit while earning 20% less than my less experienced male peers. I wore it the day a prominent Bush administration official hinted that I should have just married well instead of working hard. I wore it when my boss claimed he never encountered childcare issues because his wife had the good sense to stay home.
I wore a pantsuit whenever someone mistook me for the court reporter, the secretary, or a social worker. I wore it every time I was asked to fetch coffee during depositions or settlement conferences.
And now, I’m heading to the library with my husband and our two daughters to vote for a woman who has faced these challenges and more in her own pantsuit. We’ll cast our ballot for her with joy, knowing that regardless of my outfit, we stand as #pantsuitnation and #imwithher.
