Because my grandmother, who hailed from Portugal, faced discrimination in Florida during the Jim Crow era, often being asked to vacate restaurants or restrooms due to her rich, sun-kissed complexion.
Because my son, born with stunning skin and tight, curly black hair, often gets questioned by adults about why his complexion is darker than his sisters’, despite their similar facial features.
Because we must stop categorizing each other by color; we’re all human, and I refuse to let my children grow up in a world where they’re boxed in for someone else’s comfort.
Because my two amazing daughters are destined to make their mark on this world, and they don’t need anyone’s approval to do so.
Because I’m a blue-haired, 43-year-old wife of a lifelong Republican who’s still in the process of convincing him to switch sides, yet he stands by me during this election.
Because I grew up with teen parents who struggled to make ends meet, relying on food stamps and welfare while living in a shared residence with an outdoor bathroom; now, blessedly, I find myself in the top 1%, always remembering that circumstances do not define a person’s worth, ambition, or intelligence—everyone deserves a fair shot.
Because I’m hopeful that even though 90% of our friends are backing Trump (likely for tax benefits), they secretly support another candidate in their hearts.
Because I choose to embrace hope and love over the rampant hate, judgment, and division around us.
Because I truly believe she can do this (though I’m fighting a paralyzing fear of jinxing her by saying it).
