Chronicles from the Pantsuit Nation: United at Last
On the day of the Michigan primary, my partner, Jake, found himself in downtown Detroit, enjoying a pastry from Avalon Bakery. Just as he was about to leave, he noticed two black SUVs racing to block off the street. With his military background, he quickly pieced it together: primary day + security detail = a candidate in the vicinity. Realizing the commotion, he ducked back into the bakery just moments before Secret Service agents sealed the exit. He was one of only five patrons inside when Hillary Rodham Clinton (HROD) arrived.
At that time, we were definitely a house divided. I had been a devoted supporter of Hillary from the get-go, while Jake was firmly on Team Bernie. Our differing political allegiances had sparked a few fiery debates.
Hillary entered the bakery and spent an unhurried ten minutes engaging with each of us. She listened intently, asking thoughtful questions that demonstrated her genuine interest. Jake, on his way to a job interview for a small UAV pilot position, ended up discussing FAA regulations with her. She inquired about how she could help simplify those rules for the industry. After their conversation, she wished him luck for his interview, and he returned the favor regarding hers.
Once outside, Jake called me, his voice shaking with emotion. He was profoundly touched by her attentiveness and sincerity. He couldn’t stop thinking about our daughters and how her presidency could redefine what’s possible for them.
Jake had met Bill Clinton once during his service and had also crossed paths with Bernie Sanders (after spending several years living in Vermont before returning to Detroit). He remarked on the stark contrast between those encounters and his conversation with Hillary. With her, he felt truly seen and heard.
I’ve never experienced jealousy quite like it! However, that day marked a pivotal moment for him. Since then, he has proudly joined me as an HRC supporter. We are no longer a house divided; we are united behind her!
