Fifth Grader Breaks Language Barriers with Google Translate to Befriend New Classmate
In a heartwarming display of kindness, fifth grader Lily Thompson noticed her new classmate, Diego Morales, sitting alone during lunch. Determined to help him feel included, she approached him for a chat, only to discover that Diego spoke primarily Spanish and Lily’s language skills were lacking. But did that stop her? Absolutely not!
Having previously hosted exchange students, Lily’s family was no stranger to language barriers, and she had a clever plan up her sleeve. With the help of Google Translate, she crafted a friendly note inviting Diego to join her and her friends for lunch. The note was a sweet little gem that read: “Would you like to sit with me today? Look for me, and I’ll show you where I sit. We can color or share scary stories. Thank you, signed Lily.” After a quick proofreading session with her mom, she was ready to make her move.
Lily’s mom, Sarah, couldn’t help but tear up at her daughter’s thoughtful gesture. “I’ve been emotional since I heard about it. It’s just so precious,” she shared with ABC News. “I always told her, ‘Find the new kid.’ They may not always remain friends, but they won’t forget your kindness.”
The note did wonders! Not only did Diego join Lily for lunch, but they also developed a friendship that extended beyond the cafeteria. As luck would have it, they lived in the same neighborhood and even teamed up for trick-or-treating on Halloween, where they had Diego belting out the “trick-or-treat, smell my feet” song by the end of the night.
Currently, the duo is communicating through drawings while they learn each other’s languages. As Lily wisely puts it, “I just think he shouldn’t be alone. Everybody should have a buddy.”
