Why I’m Embracing Christmas Cheer Early This Year

Last week, while driving my kids around town, I stumbled across a radio station playing Christmas tunes. At first, it felt like a strange déjà vu, akin to seeing your teacher in the grocery store wearing sweats and buying wine. It just didn’t fit. But when it hit me what I was hearing, my reaction was, “Oh, heck no! It’s not even the holidays yet!”

I felt a wave of annoyance wash over me, similar to when a store starts pushing school supplies while I’m still trying to enjoy summer. Seriously, Target, give me a break! I tried to deny the impending holiday season. Nope, not happening.

But as I listened to my kids bicker and read one more depressing news article, I thought, “Why not? Let’s deck the halls!”

I know that decorating this early goes against the unwritten rule of “No Christmas Before Thanksgiving.” We haven’t even defrosted our turkey yet, and pumpkin spice season is still in full swing. I should be waiting until after Thanksgiving, but this year, I simply don’t care.

Sure, it might feel odd to hang ornaments while leaves swirl around my yard on a sunny day, but who cares? I’m ready to ditch the pumpkins and embrace some festive cheer. I want glitter, shiny ornaments, and twinkling lights. Luckily, I’ve got a stash of decorations from last year and didn’t bother to take down the outdoor lights, so we’re good to go. #lazinessforwin

Instead of waiting until the day after Thanksgiving, I’m pulling out the red and green bins today. I’ll sing along to Bing Crosby while I trim the tree and laugh my way through “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.”

I plan to greet strangers with an enthusiastic “Happy Holidays!” and indulge in pine-scented candles and shiny decorations, even though I don’t really “craft.” Who knows, I might even slap some ridiculous Rudolph car decals on my minivan.

I’m all in to feel bright, merry, and cheerful. If you’re one of those “wait until after Thanksgiving” folks, honestly, just zip it. Let’s not steal joy from others. Plus, studies show that people who decorate early tend to be happier—fact.

The world might sometimes feel like a dumpster fire, but we’ve got to find joy where we can. So, I’m giving a big middle finger to negativity by extending the holiday spirit. The world could use more sparkle right now!

Summary:

This year, I’m choosing to embrace the holiday spirit early, breaking the rule of waiting until after Thanksgiving. In a world that can often feel gloomy, I believe that a little sparkle can go a long way toward lifting spirits. Let’s celebrate joy and cheer, regardless of the calendar!
