Crafting with Kids: The Messy Reality of DIY Fun

Engaging in arts and crafts with the kiddos always sounds delightful in theory. It’s one of those “must-do” activities that parents feel obligated to check off the list, so our little ones can reminisce about the good times spent surrounded by colored paper, glue, and a sprinkle of glitter. However, once you dive in, the reality can be a whirlwind of chaos.

Suddenly, the kids are bickering, and you’re overwhelmed by the glitter explosion and sticky mess spreading across the table. The original vision of a masterpiece quickly morphs into a Pinterest fail that falls woefully short of expectations. Instead of a charming craft, you’ve produced a chaotic jumble of art that no one wants to claim.

At least that’s the experience in my home, and I can’t imagine I’m alone in this. Next time, I think I’ll stick to crafting solo or maybe support a local mom who actually has her crafting act together at the holiday fair.
