Listen Up: Your Swastikas Don’t Intimidate Me

I have this rather naive notion that if I can grasp the reasoning behind racist symbols, maybe I can tolerate them more easily. Spoiler alert: it never works, because hate has no logic.

I was born into a Jewish family. My mother is Jewish, as was her mother, who married a man who left Germany at age ten to escape folks waving swastikas who were eager to end his life. To put it simply: that symbol flopped. It didn’t manage to wipe out Jews from existence. I’m here, breathing and typing, sipping a refreshing iced coffee, while vibing to a chill mix on Spotify. I must truly horrify you.

When I see your swastika, I can’t help but wonder what you hope to accomplish. What’s your end goal? Are you expecting me to take one look and decide to end my life simply because you don’t want me around? You have no authority over me. You can’t dictate how I or this country should operate. Policies aren’t drafted in spray paint.

“Go to Auschwitz!” a rally-goer once yelled. Really? How does that improve your life? How are Jews making your existence worse? What do you gain from wishing away an entire ethnicity? Your fragile ego doesn’t count as a valid reason. I want a real answer, but I know I won’t get one, just as you won’t see your dream of eradicating everyone you dislike come true. Life isn’t fair, I guess.

Perhaps you think that since the Germans (it’s a German symbol you’re using, right?) were so efficient in their genocide, you could borrow from their playbook to achieve your ambitions. But what exactly is your ambition?

Is it mass murder? Or would mass imprisonment suffice? Are your taxes going to fund my incarceration or extermination? You do realize these things require money, right? I know you loathe higher taxes, and right now, there’s no “genocide fund” in the Federal budget, so I just don’t see that happening.

You don’t have a plan. You don’t have an idea. You merely want to throw a tantrum in our democracy because you lack the intelligence to participate effectively. You’re like a crazy straw sticking out of a tall glass of rat poison—utterly nonsensical.

That’s all I need to remind myself during this wave of bigotry: hate is illogical. It lacks reason, motivation, or justification. It’s just nonsense. If you think it through, even you, the festering sore on our society, will eventually recognize that hate is pointless when the song plays out.

You’re a dying breed, waging a futile, imaginary battle. The future is marching forward, and unless you’ve invented a time machine (in which case, let’s go see Fleetwood Mac in the ’70s!), it’s beyond your control. I can’t fathom what causes your discontent. It’s not Jews, Muslims, people of color, or anyone in the LGBTQ+ community.

What fuels your hatred? Were you bullied? Did we hurt you? Or are you simply so ignorant that you can’t see how we haven’t negatively impacted your life even slightly? So oblivious that you can’t appreciate the beautiful, inclusive society we’ve built, instead yearning for a past that doesn’t exist? It’s like trying to stop the sunrise. Good luck with that.

Let me be perfectly clear: when I see your swastika, fear is the last thing on my mind. I’m not scared of your spray-painted hate plastered on a wall. You vandalized public property and ran away like a frightened child. You’re not rallying support for a noble cause; you don’t have one.

You already possess everything you need (just take a look at Syria and see how they’re living). You just crave more, as if it’s your birthright to have everything handed to you without compromise. It’s not. We earn what we have. You don’t consider what you could give back to a country that provides you so much (freedom, military protection, running water); you only focus on what else you can claim, simply because you say so. What a petulant attitude.

You lack a plan or a genuine goal; you merely want to unleash your entitled frustration on anything that stands still. Meanwhile, I, along with countless others who believe this country is already fantastic, intend to keep progressing forward.
