Meet Alex Green, a knitting enthusiast who has been honing his craft since 1999. This year, he’s already making waves and is in the running for Crafter of the Year, even though it’s not yet February. Alex is gaining internet fame for his one-of-a-kind sweaters that depict famous landmarks, which he proudly wears while visiting these sites. His whimsical project recently went viral, charming viewers across the web.
Just a few days ago, Alex’s colorful sweaters adorned with iconic scenery made a splash on Reddit, racking up an impressive number of likes and shares on social media platforms. The Baltimore-based knitter is now inundated with interview requests and fan correspondence from around the globe. Yet, this delightful hobby traces back many years.
“I picked up knitting in March 1999 and started with two solid-colored sweaters following a pattern,” Alex shared with a smile. “The next year, I decided to challenge myself and created my very first pattern-less picture sweater.” Since then, he has crafted an astounding 103 unique sweaters showcasing stunning locations like the Eiffel Tower and the Grand Canyon.
“I recently made sweaters of the Eiffel Tower and the Great Wall of China for a trip to Asia I took in December,” Alex explained. Each creation takes about a month to finish. “I’ve been knitting these landmark pieces one after another, inspired by anything I see that sparks my creativity,” he added.
Interestingly, the idea of posing in front of the landmarks while wearing his creations didn’t come to him until later. “So far, I have photos of myself donning 91 out of the 103 sweaters at their respective landmarks or similar settings. I aim to eventually photograph all of them, but some will require me to travel to different continents,” he remarked.
While Alex often chooses well-known destinations, he also draws inspiration from nature and culture, knitting sweaters featuring waterfalls, wildlife, and even baseball themes. He’s even made a sweater for every Jewish holiday. “I started with a Sukkot sweater and followed it up with a Hanukkah one. I’ve crafted at least one for each holiday, and some longer ones got two or three!” he shared.
Currently, Alex is working on two new sweaters. One features the beloved animated band, the California Raisins, and the other honors civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. “The Raisins sweater is for a dance themed around them at the end of the week, and the MLK sweater is in celebration of the upcoming holiday,” he revealed. We eagerly await the unveiling of both!
Since gaining popularity, Alex has been flooded with requests for custom sweaters from fans worldwide. “I have admirers everywhere who desperately want one, but it takes me an average of a month to create each piece,” he explained. “I can’t turn into a sweater-producing machine, though it does sound like a fun gig!” Even without an Etsy shop, we’ll be eagerly following Alex’s adventures as he travels the globe showcasing his knitted masterpieces.
