An Open Letter to the Secretary of Education: A Mother’s Perspective on Safety and Tolerance

Dear Secretary of Education,

I find myself compelled to reach out to you with a pressing concern. In the wake of recent events, our children—Latino, African-American, Asian, and Muslim—are facing a wave of violence and racial hostility that is simply unacceptable. We’ve seen disturbing incidents, from chants of “build the wall” to the tearing off of hijabs and other forms of intimidation. This is not just a headline; it’s a reality for our children.

I urge you to take immediate action by enforcing a strict zero-tolerance policy against bullying, prejudice, and violence in our schools. Let’s rally educators to hold school assemblies that address these issues head-on. Teach our kids how to navigate and respond to aggression. Implement communication strategies that keep parents in the loop. Host gatherings focused on safety and fostering a culture of acceptance.

As a mother of biracial kids, I’ve experienced racial bias throughout my life, and I refuse to wait for incidents to be addressed piecemeal. It’s time for a comprehensive approach to promote tolerance and safety in our educational environments. While I know that no single initiative can eliminate all issues, we must take steps to prevent further harm.

School should be a sanctuary where all children feel free to express their unique identities and be celebrated for their differences. They shouldn’t have to grapple with hatred or violence—it’s simply unfair. The safety of our children hangs in the balance, and we cannot afford to turn a blind eye. I’ve reached out to school principals and superintendents and will be sharing my efforts with fellow parents. With each passing day, more children are at risk of harm—there’s no time to lose.

I am asking for your support now.

Warm regards,
Jasmine Lewis
