Every night, I find myself spending a solid 20 minutes tidying up my son’s toys, and a good chunk of that time is dedicated to organizing his ever-growing collection of trains. He’s absolutely train-crazy! His love for these little locomotives is well-known among family and friends, who always seem to find a way to contribute to his collection. While he adores every single one, there’s no denying that his heart belongs to Thomas the Train and his crew. At just 3 years old, his knowledge about the Island of Sodor is nothing short of impressive. He can tell you who does what, when, why, and with whom—it’s like he’s got a PhD in train lore.

When I sit down to join him during playtime, I often throw questions his way about the trains. Sometimes he brushes me off, but more often than not, he proudly shares their names and what they’re up to. I’m constantly amazed at his ability to recall all these details. And then I remember: when you’re passionate about something, it sticks with you. I can relate—I was once head over heels for boy bands! My obsession was probably pricier, so I’m not really complaining about his train fascination.

It all began with the show, and next came the movies and specials on his tablet. Then the toys followed. A trip to a toy store is an adventure, as he insists on checking out the “Thomas section” and completely ignores everything else. He has his favorites, like Gordon and Henry, but he can easily name and describe about 90% of the characters. I remember my own journey starting with the Backstreet Boys, adding new groups as they came along. I knew their birthdays and favorite colors as well as my son knows his trains.

In my world, Justin Timberlake was the star of the show, much like Thomas is for my son. The comparisons are hard to resist! The “Steam Team,” the main characters, are like NSYNC—recognizable both alone and together. The Backstreet Boys? Those would be the streamlined engines—thinking they’re the best but really catering to a niche. And the Skarloey trains? They remind me of 98 Degrees, managed by someone else. Yes, I’ve put way too much thought into this.

One of the biggest parallels between my son’s Thomas obsession and my boy band craze is the financial aspect. The merchandise was outrageous back in the day—CDs, magazines, T-shirts, and concert tickets! I saw NSYNC three times, and each ticket cost around $100. Over the years, my parents probably shelled out thousands. We’re not quite at that level with the trains yet, but I’ve already spent a few hundred bucks on toys, apparel, and yes, even a pair of Thomas-themed snow boots because my son couldn’t bear to wear anything else during winter.

Fortunately, our family knows about his love for Thomas and steps in to help ease the financial burden. His grandparents send trains, and other relatives gift us with store vouchers. This Christmas, I spent my entire gift budget on Thomas merchandise, but it felt great to snag over $200 worth of goodies for just $60 on clearance! I often find myself hunting online for those hard-to-find trains, much like I used to scour CD racks in my youth.

With each new train that enters our home, I have a newfound appreciation for my parents. Being an only child meant I often got what I wanted, and while they teased me about focusing on schoolwork, they were secretly thrilled I had a hobby that kept me engaged, no matter how pricey. Some may say I spoil my son, but if you could witness how he plays—so immersed and creative—you’d see the joy it brings him. The trains inspire him to recreate scenes from the show while also inventing his own narratives. As a mom who once had a vivid imagination, I couldn’t ask for anything better.

Summary:

My son’s train obsession, particularly with Thomas, has taken over our lives in the most delightful way. While I spend considerable time organizing his impressive collection, I can’t help but reminisce about my own childhood passion for boy bands. The parallels are striking, especially in terms of financial commitment and the joy these hobbies bring. My son’s creativity flourishes as he plays with his trains, reminding me of the importance of nurturing such passions.
