I Value My Friendships, but Family Time Comes First
I truly enjoy my friendships, but when it comes down to it, I would rather be with my family at any given moment. After all, I carefully chose my partner, and he happens to be my favorite person in the universe. I’ve also poured time and energy into shaping my children into delightful individuals I want to hang out with too. Sure, we’re all a work in progress, but they will always be my top priority.
More often than not, I opt for family nights over drinks with friends. Friday evenings are dedicated to popcorn and our guilty pleasure, Project Runway Junior, and yes, we totally own our dorkiness. I frequently skip brunch with girlfriends to savor Saturday mornings with my family because after a week filled with driving the kids around and reminding them to do their chores, I just want to relish their company, even if it’s for a fleeting moment before they’re off again.
Sometimes, I prefer family time simply because, let’s be honest, wearing pants is mandatory with friends. I choose to travel with them because, despite their inevitable whining and chaos, I understand them like no one else. I can tell who’s hungry, who’s sugar-high, and who’s just being dramatic—often, that’s me! We know each other’s quirks and rhythms intimately, like we were made for each other.
I choose my family because they embody everything I didn’t know I was yearning for. They truly understand me. I can be a cheerful morning person and a movie-snoozer at night. They know my love for peanut butter cups and that I’m a nervous wreck when they’re swimming. They even tolerate my crankiness when there’s clutter around. They accept my flaws, and for that, I cherish them even more.
Despite their long-winded jokes and sticky fingers, they are infinitely more entertaining than any concert or fancy film. Time flies by so quickly; one moment, my son is 10, and the next, my daughter is 5. I dread the thought of missing any of these moments, so I’ll gladly prop my eyelids open with toothpicks if I have to!
We can have thrilling adventures together—skiing, traveling, and all the bustling activities—or we can simply lounge around doing absolutely nothing. Those lazy days, sprawled out on an air mattress piled together with snacks and movies, are often my favorite. I choose those moments wholeheartedly.
For now, they still choose me too, but I know that will change once they start driving. Honestly, that thought brings a lump to my throat. I choose them because they are mine, imperfections and all. Our family dynamics may not always be seamless, but we’re in this together.
So, to anyone who feels neglected because I might miss out on some gatherings, I apologize in advance. I only have a short window to savor these little moments because soon, they might not choose me anymore. I’m determined to soak up every second of it.
